- Your current registration or renewal noticeIt shows your plate number and the details your state has on file.
- Your license plate number and VINBoth are on your registration. The VIN is also on the driver's side of the dashboard.
- Proof of insuranceShowing the vehicle you are renewing.
- A way to payUsually a credit or debit card.
Some states ask for more, such as an emissions or safety inspection, or a receipt showing your vehicle property tax is paid. Your renewal notice normally tells you.
How to renew registration online, step by step
Check that you can renew online
Most states allow online renewal, but not for every vehicle or every situation. Your renewal notice or your state's motor vehicle website will say whether you qualify.
Go to your state's official website
Use your state's own motor vehicle website. Its address usually ends in .gov. Be careful with look-alike sites that charge a fee and only pass your details along.
Enter your vehicle details
Type your plate number and VIN exactly as they appear on your registration. A single wrong character is one of the most common reasons a renewal is rejected.
Confirm insurance and anything else your state asks for
Many states check your insurance electronically. If your state needs an inspection or a tax receipt, it has to be on file before the renewal will go through.
Pay your state's renewal fee
Fees differ by state, and often by vehicle type, weight or county. Save or print your payment confirmation.
Receive your registration
Your state mails your new registration, and your sticker or decal if your state uses one. How long that takes depends on the state. Some states also let you print a temporary registration to carry in the meantime.
What stops an online renewal
If your state's website won't let you finish, it is usually one of these:
- Your registration expired too long ago. Many states only allow online renewal within a set time after the expiration date.
- An inspection or emissions test is missing.
- Your insurance can't be verified, because it has lapsed or does not list the vehicle.
- Unpaid tickets, tolls or taxes are attached to your vehicle or your name.
- Your details don't match the state's records. A misspelled name, an old address or a mistyped VIN is enough.
- You have moved, or the vehicle is registered in a different state from where you now live.
- The state's website is down or does not handle your type of vehicle.
