Section 9: FAQs and Common Concerns
Navigating the process of replacing or correcting a car title in Illinois can raise many questions. This section addresses the most common concerns and queries to help you feel confident and informed throughout the process. From understanding timelines to clarifying application requirements, we’ve compiled answers to the questions we hear most often.
1. How long does it take to get a duplicate or corrected title?
The timeframe depends on how you submit your application:
Direct through the state by mail: Up to 12 weeks.
In-person submission: Up to 10 weeks.
Through J.G. Title Company: 4–8 weeks, with streamlined processing.
2. Can I expedite the processing time?
Yes, expedited options are available. If using J.G. Title Company, your application can often be processed faster than going through the state directly. Additional fees may apply for expedited service.
3. What should I do if I lost my title and I’m out of state?
Out-of-state residents can apply for a duplicate title by mailing the required documents to the Illinois Secretary of State or using J.G. Title Company’s services for added convenience and reduced wait times.
4. What documents do I need to replace or correct my title?
You will need:
A completed VSD 190 form.
A copy of your valid photo ID.
Any supporting documents for title corrections (e.g., lien release, proof of name change).
Payment for the $50 fee, made payable to the Illinois Secretary of State.
5. What if my title has a lienholder listed, but the loan is paid off?
You must obtain a lien release letter from the lienholder and submit it along with your application for a corrected title.
6. Can I apply for a replacement title online?
At this time, Illinois does not allow title replacement applications to be completed entirely online. However, you can download the necessary forms and submit them by mail or in person. J.G. Title Company can help streamline this process.
7. How do I check the status of my application?
You can contact the Illinois Secretary of State directly to check the status of your application. If you’ve applied through J.G. Title Company, our team can provide updates on your behalf.
8. What should I do if I suspect title fraud?
If you suspect fraud, take immediate action:
Verify the title’s authenticity with the Illinois DMV.
Report the issue to local law enforcement and the Illinois Secretary of State’s Police.
Seek legal advice if needed.
9. Can I apply for a replacement title for a custom-built or imported vehicle?
Yes, but additional documentation may be required, such as proof of importation or certification for custom-built cars. Consult Section 5.3 for detailed guidance.
10. How much does it cost to replace or correct a title in Illinois?
