Cost Information

There are two different Kansas VIN Inspections available:
Normal VIN Inspection: $20.00
Salvage VIN Inspection: $25.00
For inspections done at a Kansas Highway Patrol Inspection Station, you will pay at the inspection station location.
For inspections done at a designee office, such as a Sheriff’s Office, the fee is paid at the DMV when you register your car.

If you are having the inspection done at a Kansas Highway Patrol Inspection Location, the fee is charged when you register your car with the DMV. DMV acceptable payments are typically check or credit card.
If the inspection is being done at a designee office (i.e. Sheriff’s Office) forms of payment will vary at each location. Typically cash, checks, and credit/debit cards are acceptable. We recommend calling your specific location ahead of time to confirm the forms of payment that they accept.

Your vehicle does not need to be insured to obtain a Kansas VIN Inspection.
We recommend obtaining insurance before you register your car, as this is a requirement to register the vehicle and get plates.

You may use an In or Out of State Driver’s License to show identification.

The owner of the vehicle does not need to be present to obtain the Kansas VIN Inspection. Any party or agent of the owner may bring the vehicle for an inspection.

If you do not have your title due to the vehicle being financed and being held at a bank, you need to contact your bank and have them send a copy of the title to you and/or your inspection station.

The Kansas Highway Patrol Inspection Stations may be able to drive to your home or work to do the inspection depending on the location. We recommend you to call your inspection station to understand their ability in your area.
For those who do not have this option, you must have your vehicle towed/transported to the inspection station to receive a VIN Inspection.
Any vehicle on a trailer will need to be unloaded for inspection process to commence.

Kansas VIN Inspections are valid for 120 days after the day of the inspection.

After you have obtained your VIN Inspection, the next step is the have your vehicle registered at the DMV.
